The pocket knife is a daily object for many: hikers, artisans, collectors or simply lovers of beautiful blades. But can we carry it or transport it freely? What does French legislation say on the subject? Here is a clear and up-to-date point in 2025.

"The Government affirms its commitment to French cultural traditions, including the legitimate use of traditional pocket knives such as Laguiole, especially in rural areas. These knives, classified in category D, are not prohibited, but their wearing is subject to a "legitimate reason", assessed according to the context (time, place, use).

Since April 2024, an experiment on the flat-rate fine (AFD) for carrying weapons is under way to combat armed violence. This procedure does not invalidate the consideration of the legitimate ground, which remains assessed on a case-by-case basis.

A doctrine of the Directorate of Criminal Affairs and Pardons (DACG), issued the 12 April 2024, governs this procedure. It clearly distinguishes the carrying (immediate weapon) from the carrying (not immediately usable weapon), and insists on the contextual assessment of the legitimate motive.

Verbatimisation by AFD requires the consent of the person concerned; in case of refusal, a traditional judicial procedure is initiated, allowing a thorough examination of the situation.

Complementary guidelines are also issued by the National Gendarmerie and local prosecutors to ensure a coherent, proportionate and contextualized application of AFD throughout the country.

In short, the Government seeks to reconcile public safety and respect for the traditional uses associated with the pocket knife, a symbol of French cultural heritage." Pocket knives: Category D according to law

In France, the legislation classifies weapons into several categories. Pocket knives, folding knives, or multifunctional knives (type Corsican knife,Opinel, Laguiole or other...) are considered to be category D weapons, specifically white weapons.

Category D – Weapons whose acquisition and possession are free, but whose port and transport are regulated.

Transport vs port: what difference?

We must distinguish between port and transport:

Port: have the knife on yourself (in a pocket, belt, accessible backpack).

Transportation: move it into a closed container, often inaccessible quickly (car compartment, closed bag).

The wearing without legitimate reason is prohibited.

Can we carry a pocket knife legally?

Yes, under conditions. The law does not prohibit it, but requires a legitimate reason. This can be:

A professional activity (craftsman, farmer, restorer...)

A sport or leisure activity (camping, hiking, fishing...)

A cultural or traditional use (collection, exhibition, cutlery craft...)

The knife must be stored and not accessible immediately: in a suitcase, a closed bag or a car trunk, not in a pocket.

What is the risk in the event of a check without a legitimate reason?

If you are controlled with a pocket knife without a legitimate pattern, even if it is foldable and non-lockable, you expose yourself to:

A contravention or fine

A grab of the knife

Or a prosecution for carrying a prohibited weapon depending on the circumstances (in particular in case of tense context or suspicious behaviour)

Where is the port strictly forbidden?

Some places are particularly sensitive, even with a legitimate motive:

Public transport (trains, buses, aircraft...)

Public buildings (prefectures, town halls, courts, etc.)

Educational or medical institutions

Public events or gatherings

Practical tips for traveling with a knife

If possible, store it in a closed bag at the bottom or in the trunk.

Keep proof of motive (trade sheet, fishing license, hiking ticket, etc.).

In an airplane, pack it in the hold (forbidden in the cabin).

Avoid having it on you at stations, airports, dense urban areas.

The special case of hand-crafted or collection knives

Handcrafted knives such as traditional Corsican knives are often items of art or collection. In this case:

It is recommended to carry them in their case, in a closed bag.

In case of control, specify that it is a collectible or gift, not a defensive tool.

Conclusion

The pocket knife is a tool, not a weapon, but French law requires it to be transported with caution. By respecting these simple rules, you can enjoy your artisanal or utility knife in complete legality and serenity.
